Our
History
TVS was started in a little church in Kalamazoo Michigan in 1995. In a Church of God of Prophecy congregation located at 713 Chicago Avenue; in the east side of the city, a Jamaican minister named D. Bill Miller was the pastor of this small congregation. He noticed that the youth in the surrounding neighborhood weren’t necessarily prepared for church during their attendance. Further investigation revealed that most were from single parent homes. More than likely, the same conditions existed in their school attendance as well. The advantage of pastoring a small congregation, availed the pastor the opportunity to provide an objective focus on the issue. In short order, a special meeting was called amongst selected individuals from the congregation; such as school teachers, nurses, college students as well as other professionals.
From said meeting, the decision was made to convert the basement area of the church into a facility to house and accommodate an after school program. In a subsequent meeting a faculty was appointed and within a month a full kitchen, several classrooms, food pantry, offices e.t.c. were in full operation, catering for approximately fifty participants which doubled within a year.
The Education Plus program (EdPlus Metrix) The Melting Pot Brigade & The Refining Woman Workshop were added to focus on unique needs and challenges that were later identified. The above services were submitted to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) under the chosen name True Vine Services Inc, which was subsequently established as a not-for-profit organization to be exempt from paying taxes. Said exemption was granted in the year 2000 with three (3) board members;
